The ICC Champions Trophy, often considered the “mini World Cup,” has been one of cricket’s most thrilling and unpredictable tournaments. While it may not match the grandeur of the ICC Cricket World Cup, the Champions Trophy has delivered some of the most memorable moments in cricketing history. As the tournament gears up for another edition in 2025, let’s dive into some lesser-known facts and revisit its legacy of winners and runners-up.
Unknown Facts About ICC Champions Trophy
1. It Wasn’t Always Called the Champions Trophy
When the tournament began in 1998, it was originally named the ICC KnockOut Tournament and was only rebranded as the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002. The first two editions followed a knockout format before switching to a round-robin format in 2002.
2. The Only ICC Event to Be Shared
The 2002 ICC Champions Trophy final between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo was washed out twice due to rain, and both teams were declared joint winners—making it the only ICC event to have co-champions.
3. A Unique Purpose – Charity Funding
The initial editions of the tournament were played to raise funds for cricket development in non-Test-playing nations. The first edition in 1998 was hosted in Bangladesh, primarily to promote the sport in the region.
4. The Tournament That Witnessed The Rise of MS Dhoni
India’s 2006 Champions Trophy campaign was the first time the world saw MS Dhoni’s long hair and fearless batting style, marking the beginning of his legendary career as a global cricketing icon.
5. The Shortest ICC Tournament
Unlike the Cricket World Cup, which spans over a month, the Champions Trophy is completed in just over two weeks, making it the shortest ICC multi-team event.
6. South Africa’s Only ICC Trophy Win
Despite being a dominant cricketing force, South Africa’s only ICC title to date remains their 1998 Champions Trophy victory under Hansie Cronje’s leadership.
