Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has turned into one of 2026’s biggest horror surprises. It opened in cinemas worldwide on 18th September, has already crossed $133.5 million at the box office against a $75 million budget, and holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the highest-rated video game adaptation on both that site and Metacritic. If you walked out trying to place a face, or you’re checking who’s in it before you go, here is the full Resident Evil 2026 cast and character guide.
Is This Resident Evil Connected to the Earlier Films?
No. This is a full reboot, not a continuation of the six films that starred Milla Jovovich as Alice, and it has no connection to 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City either. Cregger, who wrote the film with Shay Hatten, built an entirely new story and cast from scratch, drawing on Capcom’s Resident Evil games as a series rather than adapting any one title directly.
Resident Evil 2026 Cast and Characters
Austin Abrams as Bryan
Austin Abrams plays Bryan Hodukavich, a medical courier whose routine delivery to a hospital in the snowbound Colorado mountains spirals into a fight for survival once an outbreak breaks out around him. Bryan carries almost the entire film, and critics have singled out Abrams’s performance as one of the reasons the reboot works as well as it does.
Zach Cherry as Carl
Zach Cherry plays Carl, one of the Umbrella Corporation scientists Bryan crosses paths with once he reaches the outbreak zone.
Kali Reis as Maxine
Kali Reis plays Maxine, an Umbrella enforcer who is among the first to pull Bryan out of immediate danger after the film’s opening attack.
Paul Walter Hauser as Paul
Paul Walter Hauser plays Paul, another Umbrella scientist, and is the one who explains to Bryan exactly what the company’s experimental serum has unleashed on the town.
Will Merrick as Dave
Will Merrick plays Dave, a third member of the Umbrella science team caught up in the outbreak.
Zoé Bellas as Birdie
Zoé Bellas plays Birdie, part of the same Umbrella research team working inside the hospital laboratory at the centre of the outbreak.
Chris Lew Kum Hoi as Stanley
Chris Lew Kum Hoi plays Stanley, another Umbrella scientist stationed at the hospital lab.
Griffin Newman as Wade
Griffin Newman plays Wade, rounding out the Umbrella research staff Bryan encounters as he fights his way toward the lab.
Jo Martin as Andrea Vasquez
Jo Martin plays Andrea Vasquez, the hospital receptionist Bryan runs into as he tries to reach the lab.
Emily Piggford as Dr. Maria Stokes
Emily Piggford plays Dr. Maria Stokes, one of the senior researchers working on a cure once Bryan’s delivery finally reaches the laboratory.
Johnno Wilson as Wilson
Johnno Wilson plays Wilson, the Arklay County sheriff’s deputy who pulls Bryan over early in the film, in a stop that ends up setting the entire outbreak in motion.
The cast also includes Andrea Miltnerová and Karel Dobrý in smaller but pivotal roles early in the outbreak, along with Isla McRae and James Beaumont in supporting parts, and Sara Paxton, who voices Bryan’s girlfriend Michelle without appearing on screen.
The Story, Without Spoiling It
Resident Evil follows Bryan on what should have been a simple, last-minute medical delivery to a hospital deep in the Colorado mountains. A single wrong turn puts him in the middle of an outbreak caused by an experimental Umbrella Corporation serum, and what follows is a night-long fight to get his package to the one lab that can stop it.

The rest of this section reveals the ending. Skip ahead to the release details below if you’d rather go in fresh.
After accidentally hitting a pedestrian on the road, Bryan tries to get her help, only to watch a traffic stop turn fatal and the woman herself turn violent. From there, a mutated dog, an infected couple whose bodies fuse together, and a bitten child in a stranded RV push him further into the outbreak before Umbrella staffers Paul and Maxine pick him up and explain what’s really happening. As the two are killed off one by one, Bryan pushes on alone through the sewers and into the hospital itself, already bitten and worsening by the minute. He crosses a maternity ward full of infected newborns, barely survives a final chase across a collapsing skybridge, and finally reaches the lab to hand over his package. But the infection catches up to him first. As the cure is being prepared, Bryan fully turns, and the film ends with him fully mutated as National Guard helicopters close in overhead.
