What Happened When DWTS Online Voting Crashed on Premiere Night
Season 35 began over two nights, with the men’s couples on Tuesday, September 15 and the women’s couples on Wednesday, September 16. On the first night, ABC’s online voting site went down during the live show, and fans saw a 503 error. Julianne Hough told viewers that online voting was temporarily down and pointed them to text voting. Alfonso Ribeiro then confirmed that, for that night only, online votes would be thrown out and only text votes would count.
Online voting was working again by Wednesday, and the first elimination went ahead as planned, with Conner Leavitt and Adele Zaikman sent home. The lesson for fans: if the website ever has trouble, text voting still counts, so keep both methods ready.
How Votes and Judges’ Scores Decide Who Goes Home
DWTS combines the judges’ scores with viewer votes each week. That is why a high score does not guarantee safety. In Week 4 on Mariah Carey Night, Ciara Miller and Brandon Armstrong were eliminated after scoring 21 out of 30, while Guillermo Rodriguez and Witney Carson stayed in the competition with a 13 out of 30 samba. Earlier, Taylor Hanson and Britt Stewart went home in Week 3 with an 18 out of 30, higher than two couples that stayed. Fan votes can change the result, which is why voting matters. See every result in the elimination tracker.
Tips for Voting on DWTS Season 35
- Vote during the live window. Votes cast after the show closes the lines do not count.
- Use both methods if you want the maximum 20 votes per couple.
- Use the keyword shown on screen or on the voting page, and send the text only once per vote.
- If the website is slow or down, text votes still count, as on premiere night.
- West Coast fans: do not wait for your local airtime. The live window is based on the 8 p.m. ET broadcast.
