The Rings of Power: Release Date, Plot, Cast, and More

Prepare yourselves, J.R.R. Tolkien fans, for a period of Middle Earth never before seen on screen. Amazon’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, a prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, will transport us thousands of years before The Hobbit, becoming the first manufacturer to tell the tale of Tolkien’s ‘Second Age of Middle Earth.

The series is set to release on 2nd September 2022, with Amazon Prime as its streaming partner. There aren’t multiple characters in the Lord of the Rings who seem to be as important — or as loved by fans — as Gandalf.

J.R.R. Tolkien’s creation is one of the wisest, and his mystical qualities make him a powerful force for good in Middle-earth. For these reasons, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings prequel, The Rings of Power, is having some issues. While the forthcoming TV series has the potential to bring numerous beloved Tolkien novels to life on the big screen, neither of them features Gandalf. That’s because The Rings of Power will be set mainly in the Second age of Middle-Earth, and Gandalf doesn’t arrive until the land’s Third Age.

The Rings of Power: Going Back Ages

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set hundreds of years before the primary Lord of the Rings trilogy in the Second Age. Amazon revealed the setting when they published a picture of the island of Numenor, the birthplace of Aragorn’s people, the Numenoreans. They continued to live there until the occurrences of the primary Lord of the Rings story destroyed their home, destroying Numenor, which will emerge in the series.

It’s worth noting that the Second Age in the books lasts for 3441 years, so there are a plethora of stories to tell across multiple seasons. Because of the setting, Frodo, Aragorn, and the majority of human protagonists will not appear in the series. However, some elves will undoubtedly appear, including Galadriel. Sauron, as well as the Numenorean king Isildur, will appear.

Is the Rings of Power connected to the Movies?

They have nothing to do with Peter Jackson’s films. They are, however, adapted from material written by Tolkien himself and set in the hobbit and Lord of the Rings universe. Amazon is producing “The Rings of Power” series based on Tolkien’s book and bringing in characters from the second age of Middle-Earth.

Number of Seasons
