Poacher is based on real events that took place between 2015 and 2017 when the CEO of Wildlife Trust of India, Jose Louies, along with his team, ran Operation Shikhar to uncover elephant tusk poaching and the horrific way in which these majestic animals were butchered. The operation led to the arrests of 72 people in which government officials, poachers, carvers, and ivory dealers of high level were involved. It was the largest case of poaching in India ever. The gang was involved in poaching for more than 10 years, and Operation Shikhar ran for three years in which they saw 50 elephants that were hunted down. However, Louies says that the number could have been much higher.
