What Is Indian Idol: Legends Return About?

Indian Idol is Sony Entertainment Television’s long-running singing competition. It first aired on 30 October 2004, adapted from the British format Pop Idol, and the idea has always been the same: singers audition, perform live, and the audience votes for the winner. The most recent season, Season 16, ended in July 2026 with Jyotirmayee Nayak of Odisha lifting the trophy. We covered the final night in our Indian Idol 16 winner report.

Legends Return changes the cast rather than the stage. Instead of new auditioners, it brings back singers who have already made their name on the show, across generations, from Season 1 winner Abhijeet Sawant to the Season 16 runners-up. The first promo was released on 25 September. Himesh Reshammiya has described it as the biggest battle in the history of Indian Idol and said that past champions must prove themselves again, because winning once is not enough. Himesh Reshammiya on Indian Idol

Himesh Reshammiya is a singer, composer and actor who became a familiar face on the Indian Idol panel. He judged Seasons 12 and 13, sitting alongside Neha Kakkar and Vishal Dadlani, and his return to the judges’ chair is the first piece of confirmed judging news for Legends Return. The promo shows him back in the role, with Sony saying more details are coming.

What Is the Format of Indian Idol: Legends Return?

Sony has not published a full format yet, so here is what is known and what is not:

• The cast: 24 singers from different seasons and generations of Indian Idol, from past winners to runners-up and finalists, announced as 12 pairs who perform together.
• The tone: Himesh Reshammiya has described it as the biggest battle in the history of Indian Idol and said past champions must prove themselves again. Some reports instead describe it as a nostalgic reunion of familiar voices, so it is not yet clear how competitive the format will be, or how the pairs are judged.
• The people: Himesh Reshammiya as judge and Aditya Narayan as host, as seen in the promo videos.
• The schedule: Saturdays and Sundays at 8 PM on Sony Entertainment Television, with streaming on SonyLIV.
