Cocaine Bear: A Drug Grazed Bear on a Murderous Rampage

Directed by Elizabeth Banks, Cocaine Bear is inspired by a true event that took place in 1985 when a drug runner’s plane crashed in the Chattahoochee mountains of Tennessee, Georgia, and a duffle bag full of cocaine went missing, only to be found by a 500-pound black bear that ingested it.

Theatrically released on February 24, 2023, by Universal Pictures in the United States, Cocaine Bear is a dark thriller comedy action movie about a small town in Georgia where the locals and tourists must come together to defend themselves from a huge American black bear that has ingested a duffle bag full of cocaine and is on a murderous rampage.

Movie critics are calling it a ‘Gonzo Delight’ – it is silly and explicitly outrageous and even makes you think what you are watching, but it definitely is irresistible! There are several energetic characters that keep the audience intrigued, including the drug dealer and his son, the drug dealer’s minion, a Norwegian tourist, a deranged Park Ranger, and her unwilling paramour, a veteran police officer who is irrationally attached to his Maltese, a mom looking for her lost teenage daughter and three delinquents who are fans of Marcel Duchamp. The movie is a mix of giggles and carnage!

Cocaine Bear can be said to be a guilty pleasure. It has a thrilling opening in the first few minutes but gradually loses its momentum. The movie gives you Jaws-like chills as the drugged bear slashes and tears the characters apart – it will make you chuckle and jump. Yet there are some scenes that are anything but convincing.

Instead of showing the audience the time how the bear ingested the duffle bag of drugs, the makers keep introducing new characters to the movie. The characters keep you entertained as they wander around the park, but some scenes are redundant and sluggish, and you wish they were a bit faster and wittier.
